Exceptional antique French mechanical table/dinner bell dating to the 19th century, approximately 1850–1880, in the ornate style associated with Palais Royal and Napoleon III-era decorative objects.
The bell features three large naturally iridescent mother-of-pearl shell panels mounted within an elaborate metal framework decorated with dimensional grape clusters, leaves, flowers and curling vines. An impressive sculptural bird in flight crowns the top.
A mechanical push/lever assembly activates the internal bell/clapper. These decorative bells are variously described as dinner bells, servant bells, hotel/reception bells or table bells, and comparable examples were produced and sold in France during the mid-to-late 19th century. Documented Palais Royal examples were also marketed as luxury decorative souvenirs.
The piece rests on a substantial circular white stone base that appears to be alabaster, consistent with documented period examples.
