The substantial carved wood panel measures approximately 9” x 9” and features a dimensional bas-relief design with a highly stylized female figure in an elaborately patterned dress, surrounded by a sweeping organic border.
Similar carved Zodiac wall panels were produced by a number of European and American makers during the Mid-Century Modern era and into the 1970s. Comparable unidentified examples have been attributed to German production, while noted designer Evelyn Ackerman also produced carved Zodiac panels for Panelcarve during the Mid-Century period.
This particular panel is NOT being attributed to Evelyn Ackerman or Panelcarve. No maker’s mark or manufacturer’s stamp has been identified, and the exact designer, manufacturer, country of origin and date remain unknown. Ackerman/Panelcarve is mentioned only as a related period example of Mid-Century carved Zodiac design.
The reverse has a very dark finish with dramatic natural wood grain visible throughout. The exposed edges show the substantial solid-wood construction. Wood species has not been professionally identified.
